Jerry Alexander studied at The Universities of Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne. He is an established figure on the contemporary art scene and has played an active part in art in West Essex, having been a member of Islington and Essex Art clubs. His work has been widely exhibited nationally as well as in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
His artistic interest focuses on landscape and seascape subject matter, exposing the relationship of buildings and man-made objects to landscape - the way they sit in and grow out of the landscape, and the effects of dereliction and biological degradation on them. With regard to his Mediterranean paintings he also exploits the way light and shade break up and change the subjects mass.
His distinctive paintings are laid onto canvas with painting knives and working with rich impasto pigments, he takes us from the searing yellows and crimsons of the Mediterranean to the cool greens and blues of Ireland; and from the sun bleached squares of Havana at middy to the shimmering reflections of the canals of Venice. Each painting is distinctively an’ Alexander’, yet the variation and contrasts he uses, gives each one it’s own identity, and sense of place.
His more recent work demonstrates abstracted interpretations of the landscape executed in slabs of rich colour and texture, built up on a strong linear framework. This bold use of colour generates a unique energy, persuading us not simply to view the landscape, but rather to experience its true essence.
Statement - "A key element in my work is the relationship of buildings and man-made objects to landscape - the way they sit in and grow out of the landscape.
Because of my architectural and graphic training I automatically approach a landscape in terms of abstract and cubist shapes which I then develop in terms of form and finally arrange to produce a refined design incorporating, light, shade and colour".
