Born in London 1921 of Greek parents, John Christoforou studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts 1935-8 before returning to England where he served in the RAF during the war. He is considered an important pioneer of the “New Figuration” movement which emerged in the ‘60s typified by extraordinarily powerful portraiture representing the unleashed forces of man’s nature and which have been referred to as messianic visions. In 1949 his first solo exhibition was held at Twenty Brook Street, London. This is no. 4 from that exhibition.
