1878-1961 An important name in British C20th art, Steven Spurrier was born in London and initially trained as a silversmith until his talent for illustration came to the fore. He studied at Heatherley's and at the Gilbert Garrett School and in 1900 began free-lancing as a magazine illustrator, working for Madame, The Graphic, Illustrated London News etc. Served with Military Intelligence on dazzle camouflage in WW1. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1913. R.B.A. 1933, A.R.A. 1945, R.A. 1952. Author of Black and White 1910 and Illustration in Wash and Line 1933. His work is featured at The Tate Gallery, V&A Museum and the National Portrait Gallery
